On the jury of the
“Constance Design Awards”

Every semester, the HTWG Konstanz awards the “Constance Design Awards” for the best final theses in the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes in Communication Design. The works are judged by an external jury, which this time included Boris Schmelter.

The HTWG Konstanz is a modern university with an application-oriented profile. The connection between theory and practice is in the foreground. For example, the “Constance Design Awards” have been awarded since 2015: Graduates of the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes in communication design are judged by an external jury, which honours the best works.

The members of the jury change every semester, but they all have one thing in common: they are all experienced designers with many years of professional experience in leading positions. In addition to Sebastian Becker, Charlotte Bufler and Beat Keusch, Boris Schmelter was also part of the 4-member jury in the summer semester of 2022.

The students were free to choose their topics, and the results were similarly diverse. A total of 20 Bachelor’s theses and 12 Master’s theses were examined by the jury, which subsequently awarded three prizes. Bachelor’s graduate Sophia Wild dealt with the meaning and relationship of man and material and secured second place with her work Material Meaning.

On a par with her, Robert Straubmüller also took 2nd place. In his Master’s thesis conactive, he created speculative design drafts for a screenless office and thus explored opportunities for multimodal interaction.

1st place went to the outstanding work What we are fighting for by Bachelor’s graduate Ella-Sophia Seeger, which uses photography, poetry and moving images to address FLINTA* (German abbreviation that stands for women, lesbians, intersex, non-binary, trans and agender persons) daily struggles while encouraging her to work for a more equal and free life. Congratulations to all the award winners!
